OAT Test Preparation

High score in the OAT serves as one of the influencing factors in the selection of the student into an optometry school. There are many sample tests available on the net free or for a minimal charge to help students to prepare themselves for the OAT test. By practicing on the sample test the students can train themselves in time management and also determine the areas they are weak in and improve on them. The students can prepare themselves through books, Cds and other sources that are readily available for this specific purpose.

Almost all the 17 American colleges of optometry accredited by the Council of Optometric Education of the American Optometric Association requires its applicants to have a completed their under graduation. Students prefer to major in the natural sciences in college because the fundamental requirements for optometry schools are science oriented. It is not necessary that the student major in science, he could major in any degree discipline as long as he completes all of the prerequisites needed for admission into an optometry school.

Most schools believe that the student’s exposure to optometry very essential. It is advantages for the student to acquaint himself with an optometrist. They could also gain insight of what optometrist do on a daily basis through experience. Exposure to the field is often given top priority during the personal interview for admission.

Since the necessities for admission to the schools and colleges of optometry vary from each other the students need to undergo at least 2 years of undergraduate training with course materials on biology, chemistry, organic chemistry, general physics, and microbiology; English; college mathematics; and other social science and humanities courses. It is necessary that the science courses are in the pre-professional level and are intended for science majors or health professional students and should present laboratory experience. Short science courses are not enough to prepare oneself for the optometry school. The students are strongly advised to discuss their goals with the pre-optometry counselor at their school or with the counselor at the school or college of optometry that they plan to attend.
