PMP Test Structure
The examination consists of a total of 200 multiple-choice questions including the 25-pretest questions. Pretest questions are randomly placed throughout the exam and do not affect the candidate’s score. They are used as a valuable and genuine way to increase the number of future examination questions.
The test has to be completed within a four hours limit. There is a 15-minute computer tutorial preceding the test and is not included to the allotted four hours.
PMP Examination questions:
- are developed and validated by global work groups of content experts
- are referenced to current resources from project management textbook sources
- are monitored through psychometric analysis, and
- satisfy the test specifications of a job analysis
The passing score for the PMP Examination is determined by a standard orientation method called the Modified Angoff Technique, a certification industry regular practice relying on the joint conclusion of groups of PMP certified candidates from around the globe. Diagnostic score reports provide the candidate with an overall percentage of questions answered correctly for each Domain and Knowledge Area. To pass the PMP examination, candidates must answer a minimum of 141 of the 175 scored questions correctly. It is possible to pass the exam even if the candidate fails one or more of the Domains.
All of PMI’s certificate tests are directed in English. Examination language aids are available to assist candidates for whom English is a second language.The aids provide a translation of exam questions and answers and are available in 10 languages – Chinese (Simplified), French, German, Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese (Brazilian), Russian, and Spanish.
The PMP is a computer-based exam conducted at the Prometric test centers. The pass mark is 81% (141/175). The 200 questions are selected at random from a wide-ranging catalog of questions. The distribution of questions as distinct in the PMP Examination Specification is as follows: initiating the project 11%; planning the project 23%; executing the project 27%; monitoring and controlling the project 21.0%; closing the project 9.0%; professional and social responsibility 9%. Only candidates satisfying the educational and practical requirements for either category 1 or 2 as specified above can achieve PMP certification. Each candidate must also demonstrate an satisfactory and legitimate level have perceptive and familiarity of Project Management by acquiring a passing score of 61% on the PMI exam: (that’s 106 correct answers from a possible 175 multiple choice (4) exam).
