GRE TEST SECTIONS
The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) score is used by graduate schools as a screening tool in their admission process of selecting their students . Each of the GRE Test Sections has a score range of 200 to 800 points. The GRE exam is comprised of 3 sections. They are
The Verbal Section: 30 questions in 30 minutes
The Quantitative (Math) Section: 28 questions in 45 minutes
The Analytical (Logic) Section: 2 Essay in 75 minutes
A student appearing for the GRE does not need any specialization to take this test.
Verbal Reasoning section helps to assess the students understanding of the English language. There are a total of 30 questions in this section. The entire 30 question have to be answered within the 30 minute time period provided. The test helps in measuring the student’s aability to draw conclusions through analyzing written materials and to associate the different parts of a sentence. It also tests the student’s knowledge of relationships between concepts and words. The questions deal with Antonyms, Analogies, Sentence Completion, and Reading Comprehension. There is no fixed order or number of questions that is followed in the presenting these four types of questions.
Quantitative Reasoning section consists of 28 questions that the students have to answer within 45 minutes. The questioning level in this section is usually that of the high-school level. Basic knowledge of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and data analysis is all that the student needs to know to attempt this section.
Analytical Writing section helps determine the student’s ability to analyze. The student is expected to write 2 essays within the time period of 75 minutes. One of the essays would concern an “issue” and needs to be completed within30 minutes. The next essay is on analysis of an “argument” that has to be complete within 45 minutes. At the end of the time limit of this section the student is permitted a ten minute break. This break is optional and the student can start on his next task immediately if he wishes, but, it is advisable to use the permitted break time to relax and prepare oneself toward the next aligned tasks. The essays need not be very elaborate, comprehensive, or high styled. The student should concentrate more on writing the essays concisely and eloquently. This section helps to measures the student’s ability to articulate complex ideas in a concise and effectively manner. His ability to articulate ideas in standard written English, present an argument with proper reasoning and carry on coherence in thought process, play a crucial role in achieving high scores in this section.
